Big Changes at the Macau Grand Prix 2024: Sponsors Scale Back as Concessionaires Adapt

The next edition of the prestigious 71st Macau Grand Prix, scheduled from November 14 to 17, is brimming with changes in sponsorship contributions and event format. This year, Macau’s top casino operators have collectively pledged a sponsorship of MOP100 million (US$12.5 million), which marks a noticeable decrease from last year’s MOP120 million (US$15 million).

In a noteworthy shift in sponsorship dynamics, major casino concessionaires like Galaxy, Sands, SJM, and MGM have maintained their contributions at MOP20 million each. However, Melco Resorts & Entertainment and Wynn Macau have scaled back, offering only MOP10 million each compared to last year’s uniform contributions. These adjustments in sponsorship levels reflect a more cautious investment in this year’s race, accounting for approximately 41.6% of the event’s MOP240 million (US$29.9 million) budget.

Luís Gomes, Director of the Macau Sports Bureau, expressed optimism about the robust international participation expected at the event. He mentioned, “The budget for this year’s Grand Prix is MOP$240 million (US$29.9 million) and there are currently about 180 drivers from 35 countries and regions participating.” Despite the reduced sponsorship, the buzz surrounding the diverse lineup of races remains high. This year’s Grand Prix will introduce the Formula Regional category, replacing the traditional Formula 3 main event, showcasing the evolving landscape of junior single-seater racing.

Unlike the previous year’s six-day event, the 71st Macau Grand Prix will revert to a focused four-day racing format. This streamlined schedule aims to intensify the thrill of the event, maximizing every racing moment. The Grand Prix will feature seven events, including the FIA FR World Cup, Macau GT Cup, and the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Francois Sicard, FIA’s director for single-seater strategy and operations, emphasized the economic impacts and community engagement fostered by the Grand Prix. Last year’s ticket sales alone generated MOP17 million (US$2.1 million), underscoring the significant economic boost the event brings to local tourism. Moreover, the event’s global media attention helps elevate Macau as a premier destination for international sporting events.
