Florida’s sports betting scene is on the brink of transformation, with Hard Rock International considering partnerships with prominent commercial sportsbooks, potentially breaking its exclusive hold on the market.
At the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, Jim Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International and CEO of Seminole Gaming, revealed the company’s openness to collaborating with major sportsbook operators such as FanDuel and DraftKings. Allen highlighted a shift towards a more cooperative approach, stating, “I would say whether it’s FanDuel or whether it’s DraftKings, we’ve actually developed a great relationship with them,” as reported by CNBC.
This shift in strategy could mark a significant change for Hard Rock, which currently holds exclusive rights to sports betting in Florida under a tribal gaming compact. Despite previous resistance from competitors, Allen acknowledged the potential benefits of partnerships, stating, “We do recognize that long term, some type of strategic relationship with some of the brands that really have marquee value could be helpful to both of us, and we are receptive to those conversations.”
With Florida’s large population and numerous professional sports teams, the state presents a lucrative opportunity for sports betting operators. While Hard Rock’s monopoly has provided a unique advantage, the entry of well-known brands like FanDuel and DraftKings could bring diversity to the market, potentially increasing engagement and revenue.
The recent expansion at Seminole Hard Rock, where sports betting operations were launched in December at six locations in Florida, has been seen as a significant development for the state’s gaming industry. Allen’s openness to partnerships aligns with FanDuel CEO Amy Howe’s view of Florida as a key target for expansion alongside California and New York.
